Chelsea: 5 Reasons Why They're In Decline

2. Rafa Benitez

Rafa Benitez has never been a popular choice of manager at Stamford Bridge, illustrated by fan protests in his opening home game where the crowd made it painfully obvious that he was unwelcome at Chelsea. Though the discontent among the Stamford Bridge faithful has quietened in recent times, it is still fairly obvious that the majority of fans want him out. His appointment on an interim basis also breeds uncertainty and the players just don't know if he is coming or going. Because of this, there is no authoritarian figure at the Bridge and if ever there was a dispute between players and staff, it is obvious who would come out on top given Benitez could be dismissed at the drop of a hat. Because of this, there is no respect or discipline, two things that a manager must exert over his players if he is to be a success at a club. If Benitez loses the dressing room, Chelsea could easily find themselves way off the rails.
