Chelsea Transfers: 5 Players Mourinho Must Sign To Secure Premier League

Standing still simply isn't an option.

Suggesting the current Premier League champions must add yet more talent to their roster to retain the title this coming season may seem ludicrous, with no other contenders giving Mourinho€™s men a real fight on their march to last season's trophy. However, this would be a premature judgement. This pre-season has shown that the side will face much stiffer competition from the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal, with Van Gaal and Wenger having already made crucial signings in their bid for the title. Outgoing players coupled with stronger competition have placed pressure on the Chelsea boss to re-assert his dominance in the English game. The current first team needs little tweaking; injury and suspension cover is needed, and replacing outgoing players are the areas that Mourinho will be required to sure up if he is to hold the trophy in what is shaping up to be a very interesting season. Last season Chelsea faced little resistance in their domestic campaign, with Manchester City and Arsenal both suffering a hit-and-miss year. However, this summer Pellegrini and Wenger have shown a stronger desire to strengthen their squads, with City offering Liverpool huge funds to land Raheem Sterling and the Arsenal manager acquiring former Blues' stopper Petr Cech. Mourinho balanced Cech's departure with the arrival of Asmir Begovic from Stoke, but this may not be the only position in need of strengthening before a season that may not hand the Portuguese manager the Premier League trophy so willingly.
