More English footballing blood was famously spilt here in the name of World Cup qualification. This time it was Terry Butcher who spent most of the ninety minutes wiping blood out of his eyes and causing consternation for the England kit man and his washing machine. Again England knew that a draw would be enough to secure qualification and spent most of the match frustrating the opposition. A final minute long range effort rattled Peter Shilton's bar but apart from this England held firm and flights were booked for Italia 90.
