Italy 0 England 0 - 1997
In front of a near packed Olympic Stadium in Rome, Italy knew that a win would be vital in seeing them through qualification against an England team managed by Glenn Hoddle and guided spiritually by Eileen Drewery. Having lost the reverse fixture at Wembley, courtesy of a goal by Gianfranco Zola, England knew that a draw would be enough for them and to be fair in modern terms parked at least one bus at all times across the half that they were defending. Chances were scarce for both sides with Ian Wright perhaps having the best opportunity to break the deadlock late on. What most England fans tend to remember from that tense night is Paul Ince wearing a blood splattered head bandage following the clash of his head with an Italian elbow. At the final whistle the England team danced on the pitch knowing that they had secured a spot at the Finals to be held in France the following year with only then David Beckham's red card and Argentinian penalties stopping them in their tracks in St Etienne.
