Every FIFA World Cup Winner Ranked From Worst To Best
19. Uruguay 1930
A certain level of acclaim and prestige comes with winning the first ever World Cup. Champions Uruguay won the inaugural tournament on home soil and in doing so repeated the win over Argentina in the 1928 Olympic Gold Medal match.
With only 13 teams entered, the tournament was arguably less competitive than more modern incarnations. However, with the difficult travel conditions and the novelty and sense of the unknown with the new tournament, the first World Cup posed several unique challenges.
Uruguay, following a 6-1 demolition of Yugoslavia in the semi-final, went into the final in good form. However, a pre-match disagreement over who should supply the ball, as well as the feverish and ecstatic atmosphere created by Argentina’s support meant that the final was far from a foregone conclusion.
With Argentinian forward Stábile scoring 8 goals in 4 tournament matches, including the final, Argentina were a dangerous side.
But despite the disagreement over whose ball to use, there was little doubt over who would walk away with the trophy. A 4-2 victory ensured that Uruguay, in Montevideo, were handed the first ever Jules Rimet Trophy.
