Whilst corruption in football may seem like a modern phenomenon, the 1934 World Cup was entrenched in controversy, when Benito Mussolini, much like the later Berlin Olympics, used the tournament to promote fascism.

However, amongst the nefarious political manoeuvring and the fact that previous champions Uruguay refused to enter the tournament because only four European sides were willing to travel to their inaugural tournament, football was being played and a great Italy side were crowned champions.

Having defeated the USA 7-1 in the group stage, before making their way past Spain and Austria, the hosts were in good form going into the final against Czechoslovakia.

A 2-1 comeback in the final handed Italy their first of four World Cups, with generational talents such as Giuseppe Meazza among the victorious squad. A talented squad, that sadly cannot be separated from the tournament's troubled history.
