Every FIFA World Cup Winner Ranked From Worst To Best

18. Italy 1938

Such is the quality of the sides to have won the World Cup, that this Italy squad is not regarded as one of the greats.

Becoming the first side to successfully defend a World Cup title, Italy triumphed in an abridged format of what we know the World Cup to be today. With teams entering at the Round of 16 stage, the tournament was not as long as later incarnations. However, along the way to the final Italy defeated Norway, France and Brazil before overcoming Hungary in the final.

Whilst Hungary were not the team of the 1950s that would revolutionize the game, with the likes of Puskas, Kocsis and Hidegkuti, the 4-2 final victory over this Hungary side was a major achievement for the Italians.

With the likes of Piola, Meazza and Colaussi (the first player to score multiple goals in a World Cup final) Italy were blessed with some of the country’s greatest ever players, with the limited tournament format perhaps impeding them from featuring higher on this list.

Giuseppe Meazza would go on to have the San Siro officially named after him, so perhaps that might soften the blow of this lowly ranking.
