Most Expensive Spurs XI That Failed To Deliver

10. Ben Thatcher (£5 Million)

Prior to landing new signing Ben Davies for £10 million, Spurs hadn't really spent an awful lot on left backs, but Ben Thatcher was relatively costly and didn't perform well at all. He was brought in by George Graham despite the fact that he was never really good enough to be playing for a club at the top end of the Premier League table €“ a point epitomised by the fact that, once Graham had left the club just a few months after the defender arrived and been replaced by Glenn Hoddle, Thatcher barely featured for the club again. In a nutshell, he lacked talent. He was a rash, overly aggressive player with a tendency to lash out needlessly. When he joined Spurs, Thatcher indicated that he hoped it would help him achieve his ambitions of playing for England €“ a mere two years later he had given up on the idea and opted to play for Wales (for whom he only played for seven times). By that time, he€™d already joined Leicester City for just £300,000 €“ a £4.7 million loss on a 27 year old player signed just two years earlier.
