Most Expensive Spurs XI That Failed To Deliver

9. Sebastian Bassong (£8 Million)

Spurs signed Sebastien Bassong from Newcastle United just one season after the Magpies had signed him from French club Metz. The £8 million fee represented a sixteen-fold profit for Newcastle, who had paid just half a million pounds for the Cameroon international, despite the fact he had only made 26 league starts for the North East club. Unfortunately, in a spell at Spurs that would be three times the size of his spell in Newcastle, Bassong only managed seven more league starts than he did for the Magpies. He failed to stamp his authority on the first team, couldn't hold down a place and was soon surplus to requirements. A loan spell at Wolves when they were in the Premier League was followed by a permanent move to Norwich City, who were also in the Premier League at the time. The fee was undisclosed but it almost certainly represented a loss for Spurs. Bassong now still plays with the Canaries in the Championship, following their relegation last year.
