Most Expensive Spurs XI That Failed To Deliver

11. Heurelho Gomes (£7.8 Million)

You should always be wary of Brazilian goalkeepers - even when they've played at international level - because it's not a country renowned for producing good ones. Heurelho Gomes wasn't really an exception to that rule, despite his cost. Gomes signed from PSV Eindhoven and, having conceded just 24 goals in his final campaign in the Netherlands, he also impressed against Spurs in the old UEFA Cup €“ in fact, it was his performances against them that brought him to their attention. Gomes€™ performances for Spurs were erratic to say the least. He showed some signs of a brilliant ability to shot-stop, but his handling and willingness to commit himself was poor and he cost Spurs several points in his time at the club. His main problem was that he was severely lacking in self-confidence. This was epitomised when Brad Friedel €“ who was 40 years old at the time €“ arrived as Gomes' competition in 2011. The Brazilian lost his place, seemed content to be a squad player and spent a couple of years out in the cold before startinh to express discontent at his treatment and was loaned out to 1899 Hoffenheim in 2013. He didn€™t impress in Germany and he has recently moved to Championship side Watford on a free transfer.
