Most Expensive Spurs XI That Failed To Deliver

8. Jonathan Woodgate (£8 Million)

Jonathan Woodgate was a top player in his time, but his huge injury proneness meant that he very rarely contributed close to enough to the clubs he played for (he's at Middlesbrough now and barely plays). He spends most of his time in the treatment room and unable to play. When he joined Spurs, he cost the club £8 million (from Middlesbrough, incidentally) and he lasted three and a half years at White Hart Lane. However, during that spell, he only managed 49 Premier League appearances and just 65 in total (and, when he did play, he left the field more times than anyone would care to count). Woodgate and Ledley King could have been a world class central defensive partnership for Spurs, had they both been fully fit, but they simply never were. Still, at least Ledley King didn't cost the club £8 million, only stay for three years and barely play at all.
