FC Sheriff 0-2 Spurs: 5 Key Things We Learned

5. Spurs' First Choice Full Backs Are Essential Attacking Elements

One aspect of Spurs play against Sheriff, notable by its absence, was the lack of attacking support on the wings from the team's full-backs of the evening (Zeki Fryers, Kyle Naughton and, later, Vlad Chiriches). Usually, the likes of Danny Rose and Kyle Walker are constantly zipping up and down the wing, helping in attack just as much as they are in defence, but this was nowhere near as evident in Moldova. Fryers tried, though not as often as the first choice full-backs, but when he had to go off injured the wing support was non-existent. This left the likes of Aaron Lennon and Erik Lamela very isolated when they were in possession on the flanks, as opposition players were doubling-up on them. If the backup full-backs are to have any chance of exerting their presence on the first team in Premier League games, they'll have to do better with regards to their attacking support.
