FC Sheriff 0-2 Spurs: 5 Key Things We Learned

2. There Are Still Defensive Frailties At Spurs

If there's one thing Spurs learned about their team against Sheriff it's that they do still have defensive frailties, despite their excellent defensive record this season. With their strongest back four playing, they're very good, but their full-back backup is particularly weak and it is still unclear who is best suited to partner the excellent Jan Vertongen at centre back. Vlad Chiriches looks to have the potential to be great, but he is still young, naive and often over-plays the ball to the extent that it's dangerous, Michael Dawson is a great servant of the club and a hard-worker, but whether he'll ever be truly top class is open to debate, while Younes Kaboul is a great player, but looks likely to be troubled with niggling injuries for the remainder of his career. As a result, there's sometimes miscommunication in the defensive ranks, as the partnerships change all too often, and this was extremely evident as the supposedly poor FC Sheriff broke them down all too often (indeed, they had a goal disallowed and were one-on-one with Hugo Lloris several times). Spurs would do well to sign another top class centre back at some point in the near future.
