FIFA Team Of The Year: 11 Overlooked Players Who Deserved Inclusion

1. Robert Lewandowski (Borussia Dortmund & Poland)

Finally, then, we come to the centre forward. The FIFPro team selected Zlatan Ibrahimovic in this position. But, however successful Ibrahimovic's scoring record for PSG over the last year has been, Borussia Dortmund's Robert Lewandowski has been just as good. In 2012-13 Ibrahimovic managed 35 goals in 46 games, while Lewandowski netted 36 in 49. It's also worth remembering the higher standard of opposition that Dortmund were facing while Lewandowski scored these goals. In the UEFA coefficient that ranks the quality of national competitions, Germany was top for 2012-13 with France equal fifth alongside Portugal. As a result, Lewandowski's goals can be seen as a greater achievement. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Lewandowski's superb Champions League campaign. While Ibrahimovic's three goals helped PSG make the Quarter-Finals, Lewandowski scored 10 in a run that saw him propel his team into the final. His performance in the Semi-Final against a highly fancied Real Madrid team was one of the best individual games of any player, becoming the first man ever to score four times in a Champions League semi as Dortmund won 4-1. His recent agreement to sign with Bayern Munich at the end of the season should make opposition defences very worried indeed as he teams up with the likes of Ribery, Robben and former Dortmund team-mate Mario Gotze.
