He would cement it less than a month later following his exploits in the 2005 Champions League Final in Istanbul. The clash with Middlesbrough at Anfield may have ended in a frustrating draw for Rafa Benitez's side, but the captain's equalising goal will live long in the memory. Gerrard, 24 at the time and approaching his prime, chested a ball down 35 yards from goal, let it sit up before hitting a wonderful half-volley into the top corner of the Kop net. These memorable strikes were becoming almost a weekly occurrence at this stage of Gerrard's career.
