Liverpool Transfers: 10 Players They Should Sign
7. Mateo Kovačić
Why They Should Buy Him:
Reports suggest that Liverpool are already making approaches for Inter Milan midfielder Mateo Kovačić, with numbers being suggested anywhere from £17- to £43 million. While the spread of numbers suggests this may only be rumour, he's a good target for the Reds. He's a highly promising player and reports suggest Inter would be willing to let him go for the right price.
He's a versatile midfielder who is able to play in both attacking and defensive roles, so he'd be able to fit in any holes in the Liverpool ranks and provide cover for the squad in case of injuries. That's not the main reason Liverpool should be after him, though. He's a skilful playmaker with excellent technical skills who maybe, just maybe, could be the long-term replacement for Steven Gerrard.
Why They Shouldn't:
Kovačić has been part of the Inter Milan team for the past three seasons, and in that time they've slumped to some very disappointing finishes. If the Croatian can't carry one dozing giant in Inter Milan back into the limelight, there's no reason to believe he'll be able to do so for Liverpool.
Furthermore, midfield is not the most pressing concern for Rodgers. Kovačić is a talented midfielder, but Liverpool already have a number of those and fixing their defensive and attacking problems should be the priority.
