13. Robin Van Persie
Lets start with the most recent title because I am old and I can barely remember what happened yesterday. From time to time you get a player who seems made for the Old Trafford stage, a player that you just know from his first touch was born to play for United. Whilst other players struggle to find their form and seem overwhelmed by the experience, you get players that just fit. Robin Van Persie is in this category. I appreciate that some people, especially Arsenal fans, see his transfer to Man Utd as an indictment on the modern game. Another overpaid player moving from one famous club to another, showing no loyalty. I have sympathy for this argument and to a large extent agree with its sentiment. However RVP has won me over and convinced me he has moved for all the right motivations with his performances, attitude and demeanour. Here is a player who is ambitious and just wants to win. I have always liked him as a player and at the age of 29 he has grasped his last chance to win some silverware. The romantic in me says this was never about money or ego, but destiny. What cannot be questioned is the impact Van Persie has had on United. It is easy to dismiss the transfer as completely free of risk but, whilst he is a top player, big transfers for proven talent do not always work out for the best, just ask Fernando Torres. Van Persie has slotted into the United side as if he has played there for years, and that is a testament to Fergies eye for the right signing at the right time. His willingness to break his own transfer policy about players age is also proof of his flexibilty. With 25 goals so far, including the best goal I have seen for a long time against Aston Villa, RVP has played a major part in the last triumph to be added to Fergusons impressive CV.
