Man Utd: 5 Reasons Fans Should Be Optimistic About The Season Ahead

3. Wayne Rooney

From a non-footballing point of view, there may be a lot of United fans disappointed not to see the back of Wayne Rooney once the transfer window ends - as now appears to be the case. For the second time the England forward has, publicly or not, signalled his intention to leave Man Utd - with Jose Mourinho stating his desire to bring him to Stamford Bridge. But in terms of his on-the-field ability, United fans should be delighted that Rooney looks set to stay at Old Trafford beyond the end of the transfer window. He's still a goalscorer, still a world class player and, with the World Cup coming up next summer, he'll still be determined to prove his worth to the team despite his apparent will to leave. Whilst it's true his performances weren't always up to scratch last season, his general link up-play with Robin van Persie and his goals/assists statistics showed that he is still an important player for United. Him staying also means that Chelsea would miss out on fronting an attack consisting of Mata, Hazard, Oscar and Rooney - a leading-line that would certainly make them title favourites.
