Man Utd: Ranking Premier League Goalkeepers From Worst To Best

2. Peter Schmeichel

Peter Schmeichel's retirement in 1999 triggered a series of goalkeeping arrivals at Old Trafford in the following years as Sir Alex Ferguson tried - and for so long failed - to bring in a replacement. That's how important Schmeichel was for United during his nine-year stay that saw him win five Premier League titles and (famously) the Champions League in 1999. The Dane was instrumental in that particular success, making a series of world class saves and was named UEFA Goalkeeper of the Year for 1992, 1993, 1997 and 1998. Schmeichel was a key figure in what was the most successful period of United's history as they won an historic treble and was a keystone in their domination in the 1990s. Who can forget that penalty save to deny Dennis Bergkamp in the dying seconds of United's FA Cup semi-final clash with Arsenal? Or his captaining of United as they defeated Bayern Munich in the 1999 Champions League final? Very few goalkeepers since have replicated Schmeichel's heroics at Old Trafford and he will forever go down a club legend - even though he joined derby rivals City later in his career!
