I dont think it really does get any worse than Ralph Milne, who signed for Manchester United from Bristol City for £170k in 1988; after spells with Dundee United, Charlton Athletic and Bristol City. At a dinner celebrating the 18 men to have managed more than 1,000 domestic league or cup matches, Sir Alex Ferguson remarked that Milne was his worst signing.
I only paid £170,000 but still get condemned for it. The unpopular Scotsman made almost no impact whatsoever at Manchester United, scoring three goals in his 23 appearances for the club, and went on to admit that he squandered most of his money on booze, women and gambling.

Every football fans knows who Taibi is, if you ask anybody; do you know who Taibi is? Nine times out of ten, you will get a response similar to, yes, the one who let the ball through his legs. Taibis ill-fated spell at Old Trafford only lasted a measly four games, an unbelievable statistic considering his infamous reputation in England created in just 360 minutes of football. Taibi signed from Venezia and was fairly unheard of at International level but had been steadily building a reputation domestically over the previous twelve years, hence the interest from one of the biggest clubs in the world. However, the plummeting fall from grace of Taibi was unprecedented. An awkward debut against Liverpool saw Taibi flap at a free kick and allow a goal to be conceded.
