Man Utd Transfers: Sir Alex Ferguson's 5 Best And Worst Signings

2. Laurent Blanc - Signed from Internazionale in 2001 for free

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtYixFSeBCk Laurent Blanc was brought in to replace Jaap Stam, who Sir Alex shipped out of Old Trafford after his controversial comments he made in his book, saying Sir Alex tapped him up. Anyway, if that whole Jaap Stam situation didn€™t occur, then this Frenchman wouldn€™t be ranked as one of Sir Alex€™ biggest blunders. €˜Larry White€™ as the Manchester United supporters used to refer to him as, was a long term target for Sir Alex, as he attempted to bring him in several times since 1996, but succeeded in 2001 when Blanc was 35-years-old. He was criticised for poor performances in the early months of his Old Trafford career, compounded by Manchester United€™s five early losses in 2011-02 to Newcastle United, Bolton Wanderers, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea. The introduction of the 35-year-old proved to be a turning point in the title race, the lack of pace and sharpness played a pivotal role in gifting the Premier League to Arsenal. He went on to retire two years later, helping the club to the 2002-03 Premier League title, nevertheless he still remains one of Ferguson€™s worst signings. Who said the best things in life are free?
