Newcastle 1-1 Southampton: 5 Lessons We Learned

4. Hatem Ben Arfa Remains Pardew's Biggest Headache

The Hatem Ben Arfa problem continues to rear its frustrating head. It's clear to all that he remains Newcastle's biggest threat going forward, and the Geordie Faithful's chants to bring him on after the Southampton goal only made this more apparent. What Ben Arfa did with his limited time further cemented his vaunted status €“ within minutes of being on the pitch, he'd almost scored directly from a corner and troubled Paulo Gazzaniga with a mazy dribble in the box. Yet still, it's a well-known fact that Alan Pardew doesn't truly trust his mercurial midfielder. Regardless of the nightmares he gives opposing defences, it's his own defence who are possibly most affected by his presence. Simply put, he's a liability in defence, not quite a Berbatov-esque luxury player but still unwilling to put in the hard yards to get back. In some teams, this might be acceptable €“ again, Berbatov plays week-in, week-out at Fulham, and Robert Pires of the Arsenal Invincibles wasn't exactly known for his defensive fortitude. Yet Pardew's teams pride team spirit and athleticism above all, an all-for-one-and-one-all spirit brought about by supreme effort. Ben Arfa still stands in opposition to this €“ the Magpies remained shakier-looking in his presence €“ but his potential game-winning exploits will continue to give his manager headaches.
