As Pardew is probably now being briefed on a weekly basis by the "crisis management" team provided by Keith Bishop, the public image of a manager can go some way to appeasing the fan-base. Far worse managers than he have been enduringly popular with fans at other clubs because of the way they have carried themselves publicly, and even the most arrogant of managers have gained respect because they remain professional. Unfortunately for Pardew, he comes with something of a track record of touchline controversies and wayward behaviour, and the reckless decision to "push David Meyler away with his head" - as he maintained was his intention - against Hull last year was the final straw for fans who were already unhappy with the performances of the team. Despite the grumblings that greet every accusation, fans - even at Newcastle - are a fickle lot - and victories can change perceptions of managers very quickly (as they will if Pardew wins ten in a row), but it's far harder to forget a manager headbutting a player, or pushing a linesman, or calling a respected fellow manager a "c*nt" live on TV, especially when the team werent't winning. Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger get away with it because they're top four managers, and Louis Van Gaal's bullishness is applauded because he is turning Man utd around, but it's impossible to endure a manager making such primally poor decisions when the team are slumping to defeat after defeat.
