Newcastle Transfers: 10 Worst Ever Premier League Signings

2. Jean Alain Boumsong

From: Rangers Fee: £8 million (Source: BBC) £8,000,000. 8 million pounds. EIGHT MILLION POUNDS. No matter how you write it, it still makes no sense. Boumsong was another Souness/Shepherd signing that the rest of football seem to have forgotten about when asking Greame for his opinion on anything, usually on the television. Particularly when he's offering his punditry on a Fulham game where one Aaron Hughes now plies his trade - the man replaced by Boumsong at Newcastle. Forget the fact Boumsong was atrocious, and forget the fact he cost £8 million, but he came in as Hughes was sold to Aston Villa for £1million. That's consummate professional Aaron Hughes with over 400 Premier League appearances. And to make matters worse Boumsong only signed for Rangers months earlier for absolutely zero monies. I'd still argue that they were over-charged. Souness' dealings in the transfer market were outstandingly poor and this one, like the Luque deal, also cropped up in the Stevens Report - so alongside Emre and Amdy Faye, that makes 4 transfers questioned under his watch. I can only assume Lord Stevens began his research into questionable transfers by simply watching Boumsong and Luque play. "That's all the proof you need your Lordship, he can't even kick a ball."
