M'Bengue, who was eligible to play for either France or Senegal at international level, made 12 appearances for the French U-21 side but instead opted to play at senior level for the Senegalese team. And it is hoped he could help improve one of the Premier League's worst defences last season should he move to Tyneside, with Newcastle conceding 68 goals last term.
