Premier League: 10 Summer Transfers That Simply Made No Sense

5. Didier Drogba - Galatasaray To Chelsea

Didier Drogba is unequivocally one of the greatest strikers to have ever graced Stamford Bridge. His heroics in Munich during that fateful night of May 2012 will never be forgotten, as his match-winning spot-kick granted Abramovich the European Cup he so craved. It was the fitting end to a perfect eight-year spell in west London for the powerful Ivorian. The question on everyone's lips now is 'why go back?'. Drogba will turn 37 years old this season, and while his physique and stature are still intact, it goes without saying that he is no longer the menacing goal machine during his first stint at the club. It's clear why Mourinho has brought him back - to instil a confidence, drive and winning mentality amongst his Chelsea troops, with the former Galatasaray hitman looking to serve as something of a second-in-command to the man who gave him his shot in English football. However, within a couple of days of Drogba's arrival, Romelu Lukaku was straight out the door. At just 21 years old, the Belgian international is the future, and the club will surely come to regret allowing him to slip through their fingers. Had Drogba - a behemoth who Lukaku might as well have been sculpted from - not been ushered back to Stamford Bridge, one would get the feeling that the former Anderlecht prodigy would have stayed at the club, instead of indignantly packing his bags for Everton in a £28 million deal. Drogba may will prove an inspired choice, with his experience and know-how coming in handy from the bench, but within a year or so, he will be hanging up his boots, and Lukaku will not even have begun to scratch the surface of his potential. It may well be one of the only times that sentiment has clouded Mourinho's judgement.
