Premier League: 10 Summer Transfers That Simply Made No Sense

4. Frank Lampard - New York City FC To Man City

''There were a couple of opportunities to stay here but I can't imagine playing for anyone else after being 12 years at Chelsea. I've got a lot of respect for a lot of other Premier League clubs, particularly the top ones, but I'm not sure I could have done that.'' - Frank Lampard, May 2013. Despite the oil-fuelled riches of the Roman Abramovich era, English stalwart Frank Lampard has crystallized himself as the emblem of the club. Having signed from West Ham two years prior to the Russian oligarch's divine intervention, his hard work and determination made sure that he was not to be ousted by from the first-team by any new, lavish recruits. Instead, he has helped the club to 13 major honours, including their first league title success since 1955, and a first ever European Cup. With 211 goals, he surpassed the great Bobby Tambling's record as club top-scorer. A reputation at Stamford Bridge that could never be besmirched. Which is why it makes very little sense that Lampard is currently picking up a wage from the Blues' main competitors for a first league title since 2010. Having bid farewell to Stamford Bridge when he packed his bags for New York City FC in June, a quick return flight was organised, as Manuel Pellegrini sanctioned a six-month loan deal, as the former England dynamo reneged on his promise to never represent another English club. It's not as if Lampard will even be getting match practice at City - having taken no part in any of City's games so far, it looks like his stay in Manchester could be quite an uneventful one, as he reluctantly cheers on his new team-mates as they bid to thwart the club he loves. Has Lampard's reputation been tarnished amongst Chelsea supporters? Of course not, but that is not to say that it will not sting them a little to see him don the colours of their title rivals.
