Premier League: 5 English Players Better Suited To Foreign Leagues

4. Michael Carrick (Manchester United)

Another senior England player that has come in for criticism for no apparent reason is Michael Carrick. A similar player to Barry, but better in most respects, Carrick is also a deep lying passer of the ball, and has come in for harsh abuse for being seen as not doing anything for the team. This was so much the case that even national team manager Roy Hodgson failed to pick him in his first team for his Euro 2012 squad, with Carrick pulling out of the squad. However, he is obviously worth more than that, as Sir Alex Ferguson proved when he signed him for a huge fee of £18.6million back in 2006. Since then Carrick has gone on to become one of the most important players in the squad, as well as one of the most underrated, with his apparent lack of running seen as a lack of effort. He is however, a passing genius, and plays the same role for United that Sergio Busquets does for Barcelona in that he recycles possession well and would be at home at any top European club. However like Barry, his age might have got the better of him, and his recent contract extension at United means that he will probably not get the chance to play abroad should he want it.
