Premier League: Do Top 7 Teams Need To Strengthen In January?

6. Liverpool

The Reds have proved they can compete with the the title favourites in Man City and Chelsea, but coming away with nothing from those games proves that they need extra star quality and further depth to the squad as the injuries pile up. The attacking area needs to be reinforced: Coutinho seems to be the only midfielder that can play a key pass and one of his problems is that he sometimes fades out of games. Besides that, the midfield fails to contribute enough goals to the team, with Mohamed Salah the name currently being bandied around in the media. The Egyptian only plays in the Swiss league but has proved he's up for a big game by being a thorn in the side of Chelsea on two occasions. His work rate is also something that will entice Brendan Rodgers since he likes to play a high pressing game. Elsewhere, there seems to be little faith in Iago Aspas, so further strengthening could be in the offing. Greek Kostas Mitroglou is having a good season with a return of 22 goals in 17 starts for club and country, and could represent a good option, but he's likely to be in big demand. At right back Glen Johnson was in top form last season but since his return from injury, he seems to be a bit careless in possession, so competition may be a good idea in the form of someone like Martin Montoya. But then after having a few games for Barcelona, he may not be keen on a move and for Liverpool it isn't a particularly urgent matter at this stage.
