Premier League: Do Top 7 Teams Need To Strengthen In January?

5. Tottenham

More than anything Spurs need to get the players they already have playing as a team. A lot of investment was made over the summer and shovelling in more names would probably only add to the problem. Looking at the players individually, they are more than capable of making an impact on this league, and it should just be a matter of Tim Sherwood harnessing their ability and turning fortune around. Sherwood needs to learn from Andre Villas-Boas' mistakes and stop playing personnel in positions that damages the ability of team, like Jan Vertonghen, who is one of the best centre-backs in the league and is being wasted out on the left. To help to that end, a left back and a centre-back is where business could be done. Danny Rose is a competent left back but given that Spurs were being talked up for the title not too long ago, a marauding full back would serve them better. Luke Shaw is the name on everyone's lips at the moment but his happiness at Southampton and Chelsea's interest hardly bode well for the North London club. Perhaps a more realistic choice would be Alex Buttner, who needs to make a mark on this league after his move to United.
