Premier League's Most Overrated Players By Position
6. CM - Mateo Kovačić - Chelsea
It's difficult to pinpoint what it is that Kovačić offers Chelsea. Reminiscent of Paul Pogba, Kovačić has some God-given ability but he doesn't score goals, doesn't rack up a lot of assists, and he doesn't hold the midfield like a Fabinho.
Kovačić is one of those players who has floated around for years now, with a name that carries more weight than his skill. He seemed a promising prospect at Inter Milan in the early 2010s, but following a money move to Real Madrid he became another spoke on the wheel. That sounds familiar doesn't it? He only made 73 appearances for Madrid across four seasons, scoring a single goal in the process.
Much like many other players of the past decade to come through Madrid, Barcelona, and such, that sound like big deals but rarely warrant their price tags, Kovačić wouldn't be worth much more than £20m for the Blues, and even that's being generous.
He's only on loan at the club and it's unclear if Chelsea can even take him permanently based on the transfer ban. It has been rumoured that he might be part of the Hazard-to-Madrid deal. Regardless, it wouldn't be a big loss if he left.
