3. Managerial Fisticuffs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGikHNzNZ9Y Alex Ferguson has become renowned as the master of the mind game. He understands that the game doesn't stop just because the whistle blows. It carries on right up until it blows again to signal the next match, and repeats itself like my Uncle every Christmas dinner. The best of these mind games always comes at the expense of his peers, and my word does he know how to wind them up. Who could forget Kevin Keegan's wonderful "I would love it if we beat them" rant? Rafa Benitez once said "Mr Ferguson organises the fixtures in his office and sends it to us and everyone will know and cannot complain" in an amazing 5 minute diatribe in 2009. And his long term rivalry with Arsene Wenger is well documented, and it all kicked off because Fergie said that Wenger was "a novice who should keep his opinions to Japanese football." Ouch. If this was high school, Fergie and Wenger would be the two gang leaders. Who may or may not secretly meet to make out with each other. Perhaps.
