Southampton's 10 Best Premier League Victories Ever

9. Southampton 4-2 Newcastle - 15.08.1999

Even a couple of years after their title challenges, the Newcastle of the late 1990s were still a force to be reckoned with. It seemed like they would make easy work of Southampton when a dodgy penalty allowed former Saint Alan Shearer to score his first goal at The Dell since leaving seven years earlier. The Southampton fans booing their team as they came in at half time had no idea what a turnaround they were about to witness. The introduction of winger Stuart Ripley for Le Tissier at half time transformed the game, with Kachloul still in the impressive form of the previous season and the Newcastle defence and brand new keeper John Karelse making a number of errors. Ripley's skill on the wing set up an easy equaliser for Kachloul. Southampton would score three more times in the next twenty minutes with Kachloul netting again, along with Marian Pahars and a rare goal for Mark Hughes (it was his only goal of the season and his last for Saints). With Newcastle completely destroyed (a last minute consolation goal from Gary Speed did nothing to alleviate the mood), manager Ruud Gullit would only last another week. Southampton Starting XI: Jones, Hiley, Richards, Lundekvam, Benali, Kachloul, Oakley, Hughes, Le Tissier, Ostenstad, Pahars
