Southampton's 10 Best Premier League Victories Ever

8. Southampton 3-2 Arsenal - 23.11.2002

Arsenal had comfortably won the title in the 2001/02 season, so their visit to the St. Mary's Stadium that November was bound to be a tricky one for Saints. Featuring a forward line including Henry, Bergkamp, Wiltord, Ljungberg and Pires, there looked to be little Southampton could do against such firepower (indeed later in the season, Saints would travel to Arsenal and be trounced 6-1). One of the main talking points of the time was David Seaman who had been held at fault for England's defeat to Brazil in that summer's World Cup and here returned to the Arsenal team after injury. His failure to deal with a long distance strike from James Beattie right on half time would do nothing to dispel those doubts. It also meant that Arsenal failed to go in at the break with their lead intact after Bergkamp had scored a traditional Arsenal goal full of slick passing. A sending off for Sol Campbell and Beattie converting the resulting penalty turned the game Southampton's way in the second half, but perhaps more notable was Saints' winner. It was the one and only Premier League goal for disastrous Ecuadorian signing Agustin Delgado, who nodded in the winner from three yards out. The win allowed Saints, who had lost their three previous games, to rise to 9th, a rare position in the Premier League's top half. They would finish 8th, their highest Premier League finish. Arsenal would get their revenge, not only in the 6-1 league victory, but also beating Saints in that season's Cup Final. Southampton Starting XI: Niemi, Dodd, Lundekvam, Svensson, Bridge, Fernandes, Oakley, Delap, Marsden, Beattie, Delgado
