Sunderland Transfers: Analysing The 6 Signings That Got De Fanti Sacked
5. Jozy Altidore
As a fan of the big American striker, it pains me to include him in this list. Unfortunately, the statistics just don't lie. The 24-year-old signed for a reported £8.5 million from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, becoming the club's sixth recruit of the summer. Altidore previously plied his trade at Hull City in their 2009/10 Premier League campaign, managing just one league goal in his time there. A team languishing in the relegation zone needs goals from their front men, especially in Sunderland's case with the absence of Steven Fletcher through injury. For all his endeavour, the American has failed to threaten opposition goalkeepers too much, with a single strike in the 4-3 defeat against Chelsea his only goal in 20 appearances. Altidore does possess qualities statistics struggle to quantify. With Poyet often deploying a lone striker, his ability to hold up the ball and bring midfielders into play is excellent. However, since his services commanded a rather large fee, the Mackems will be looking for more goals through the back end of the season.
