Sunderland Transfers: Analysing The 6 Signings That Got De Fanti Sacked

3 & 4. Charis Mavrias & David Moberg Karlsson

Charis Mavrias was recruited from Greek side Panathinaikos for a reported fee of £2.5 million, while Karlsson joined on a four-year deal from IFK Goteborg for around £1.5 million. Something of a raw talent 19 years of age, Mavrias has already played two times for his country and made him Champions League debut at the tender age of 16. He has made four appearances in the league so far and become something of a bad omen €“ they have lost each time. Despite the unfortunate run of results during his time on the pitch, it is unlikely to be a reason for non-selection in recent times as Poyet opts for Liverpool loanee Fabio Borini and Adam Johnson down the flanks. The Greek youngster has failed to impress in U21 games and appears to have fallen behind local protégé Duncan Watmore in the pecking order. Karlsson, also 19, has failed to appear in the Premier League, with his sole performance coming in the Carling Cup. Whereas Mavrias has comparative experience given his age, Sunderland appear to be easing the Swedish winger in gently. The old cliché of "building for the future" certainly springs to mind and there is no doubt the pair could become regular starters in three or four years' time. However, there is no escaping from the fact de Fanti's role was to immediately strengthen a squad that flirted with relegation in 2012/13. The pair represent an estimated £4 million outlay, funds which could have been used elsewhere to reinforce the squad where it was needed in the short-term.
