Sunderland Transfers: Analysing The 6 Signings That Got De Fanti Sacked

2. Stéphane Sessègnon

Every club has that one frustrating player who turns in a match-winning cameo one week, followed by a completely anonymous performance next match. It is that sporadic inconsistency that gives them an identity, with regular match-goers not sure which personality will turn up on any given week. Most Mackems would agree Stéphane Sessègnon certainly fits into that category. Ironically, it was the Benin international who opened the scoring against his ex-employers in a defeat that consigned Paulo Di Canio's brief reign to the scrapheap. Whether Sessègnon was sold by Di Canio or di Fanti will probably remain unknown, though the latter was in charge of the club's transfer dealings. Clearly he didn't take much notice of Sunderland's previous campaign, in which the midfielder starred with seven important goals. He was offloaded to West Bromwich Albion for a fee of up to £6 million shortly after this season commenced. Sessègnon's direct replacement, Emmanuelle Giaccherini, has struggled for consistency and goals are in short supply. With Steven Fletcher battling fitness and Jozy Altidore also short of goals, Sunderland were left high and dry in front of goal before Adam Johnson's breezy run of late. There is no doubt Sessègnon would slot straight back in at the Stadium of Light, so it ceases to amaze why he was sold in the first place.
