Sunderland's Greatest Ever Premier League XI

5. DEF - Steve Bould

Everybody loves a good veteran defender, and Steve Bould was exactly that. Sunderland knew exactly what they were getting from the ex-Arsenal man, and could've probably guessed his style just from reading his name. Bould was a classic, old-school defender who played a great role in the Black Cats' first season back in the top flight, finishing in 7th place. He only made 21 appearances in the end, but he was still a fine defender at the age of 37 and put the newbies on course for their two great seasons in the top flight before the rot set in and dragged them slowly downwards. Without his calmness and vast experience, the defence could've crumbled.
