Sunderland's Greatest Ever Premier League XI

7. MID - Nicky Summerbee

While the rest of the world was admiring David Beckham's sweet right foot, one small pocket of people in North East England were transfixed to Nicky Summerbee's. His crosses were marksman-perfect, set-pieces devilish, and didn't even need electric pace to command the right wing. Summerbee's career at Sunderland broke down after a bust-up with Peter Reid after the midfielder was spotted leaving a club along with Micky Gray, Chris Makin, and Melanie Sykes (true story) on the same day that they'd been hammered 5-0 off Arsenal. It was a huge shame it had to end that way, but there's certainly no ill-will between Summerbee and the fans who still remember him with huge fondness.
