The NBA Season 2015-2016: 10 Reasons To Be Excited
3. So Long Divisions
NBA management is one of the better- or at least, less awful- governing bodies in sport. Given the catastrophe that is the NFL and the corrupt quagmire of FIFA, the NBA often seems positively ethical (though the players' reps involved in the 2011 lockout may disagree). One of the major positives of NBA management, particularly under commissioner Adam Silver, has been their willingness to listen and respond to the concerns of players and fans. One notable example was the lifetime ban imposed in 2014 on then-Clippers' owner Donald Sterling for his history of racist remarks. Members of the public and players around the league called for Sterling's resignation and, when he refused, management acted swiftly. This offseason, the NBA's board of governors has once again acted to fix an infuriating problem in the league. As of the start of the new season, division winners (teams which win an otherwise largely irrelevant, location-based regular season series) will no longer be guaranteed a top 4 seed in their conference. This means that seeding will be determined on record alone, with divisions only coming into effect as a tie-breaking mechanism. It sounds like a dull, minor change but it's a huge win for fans who saw their teams lose home court advantage due to an outdated rule and then took to the internet to complain. Power to the people.
