19 Things We Learned From Steve McClaren's BBC Radio Newcastle Interview

4. Steve Knows Set-Pieces Are A Problem And Wants To Sort Them Out

It's arguably the biggest problem United have had since... Ever. Scoring from set-pieces, whether it be from a corner or free-kick is something that Newcastle simply haven't done since the turn of the decade for a number of reasons. It's an area McClaren, thankfully, knows is a problem one for Newcastle and is keen to see rectified...
"Set-pieces are the most important thing, something you can control and work on and something we hope to get better at. "It doesn't matter what team you have, they maybe have had problems before or whatever, but set-pieces are so important. "I always say set-pieces win you football matches, or, when the game's a stalemate they might just be that first goal that opens a game up. So believe you me it's something that we, especially this week, will be working on."
Steve was asked if he would be looking to bring in a set-piece specialist - to which he replied:
"Set-pieces... It is an art, delivering a ball, scoring direct, getting that ball around the wall and we're searching for people within the squad who have the capability of delivery and then movement and then of being able to attack the ball and score a goal."
Sorry to break it to you Steve, but you don't have one of those at the moment. Although, we haven't seen Georginio Wijnaldum, Aleksandar Mitrovic or Chancel Mbemba take one yet...
