10 Greatest Star Trek Moments In 2023
8. Scottish Engineering
Strange New Worlds has been ticking off the TOS Character Bingo card since it was a mere twinkle in the eye of Alex Kurtzman during Discovery's second season.
Following Pike, Number One and Spock's appearances in that show and their transition to the full blown series, the addition of established canon names kept rumbling on.
Added to the list were Nurse Chapel (making two characters played by Majel Barrett Roddenberry centre stage in the new show), Doctor M'Benga and Cadet (now Ensign) Uhura.
The climax of season one saw the physical appearance of James Kirk and the voice of a certain Scottish Chief Engineer which had fandom holding its breath for season two. Might they? Would he?
The answer was yes but Trekkies would have to wait until the final episode of the season, Hegemony, to see the introduction of Martin Quinn as Lt. Montgomery Scott.
Bearing his trademark resourcefulness, this version of the engineer would be the first time he was played by a Scot following on from both James Doohan and Simon Pegg. The cliffhanger ending pretty much ensures that Scotty will be back at least for the first episode of the strike-delayed season three. Then surely it's only a matter of episodes before Sulu and Chekov drop in for a brew.
