The opening scene of Deep Space Nine's sixth season called for a battered Federation fleet to be seen limping back to their own space. This would be one of the last shots specifically made that featured physical filming models, so the art department was tasked with creating new ships that they could damage.

VFX designer Judy Elkins received the honour of having a class of ship named after her - the Elkins-type, which formed part of the so-called Frankenstein fleet. The saucer section of an Intrepid-class was used, along with the body of an F-14 model, the pylons of a Runabout, and the nacelles of a Miranda-class.

The overall shape was similar to the original design for USS Voyager that was built by Rick Sternbach.
