10 Star Trek Characters Who Didn't Deserve Their Fate
3. Hemmer
Oh Hemmer! Hemmer, we hardly knew you! The first Aenar character to be introduced after Star Trek: Enterprise, Lt. Hemmer was the chief of engineering in the first season of Strange New Worlds. He was crucial in Uhura's early development in her career, helping her to adapt to the ever-changing responsibilities of an officer.
His lessons were so memorable that even after his departure, he remained a critical part of Uhura's training. Yet it was the Enterprise's first encounter with the Gorn that sealed his doom.
The Gorn, an intelligent Reptilian species (not to be confused with the Xindi Reptilians, who were far more chill at this point), had infested the downed USS Peregrine, though the Enterprise away team weren't to know this. They were also unaware that Gorn reproduced by infecting other species with their eggs, Xenomorph-style (though without the facehugger). These eggs would then hatch, and the host would be torn to pieces.
Delightful.
Hemmer, who the audience had come to love for his grumbling, yet kind, nature became the last victim of these monsters in All Those Who Wander. Though he is able to choose his own method of exit, from the moment of infection, there is no doubt of his fate. Thankfully, Bruce Horak would return the following season to teach us all the merits of K-Pop.
