Star Trek: 10 Characters Who Got Away With Murder

One of the most notorious murders in all of Star Trek was that of Lieutenant Natasha Yar — summarily cast aside because Denise Crosby wanted to leave the show. "I do know it was an empty death. A death without purpose," another version of Guinan would say to another version of Yar in Yesterday's Enterprise. You're damn right! Through her time-travel revived form, Yar did, at least, get some semblance of justice, if only for herself. Her original killer got off, if not entirely scot-free, then just a little bit lonely.

To be fair to all those involved, it would have been pretty difficult to bring a pool of goo to trial. Outwardly looking more like the 'Giant Oil Slick Ken' (definitely not a ten!) which ruined your kid's birthday last year, Armus was, in fact, the super-powerful sentient sum of all the bad mojo of the former inhabitants of Vagra II. It emitted a powerful energy discharge which, in an instant, "sucked the life out of" Lieutenant Yar, and could also feed off phasers and generate its own forcefield. Even if the crew of the Enterprise had been able to keep Armus confined, it was technically the Vagrans' fault anyway, and they'd skipped town a while ago.

Whilst it was the most apt and only punishment, therefore, leaving Armus behind on the planet still felt lacking. In reality, it's the writers/producers of Star Trek: The Next Generation's first season who got away with murder on this one!

Now, does everyone have their submanifold casting stone handy? It's time to check in on the "big bag of crap."

Jack Kiely is a writer with a PhD in French and almost certainly an unhealthy obsession with Star Trek.
