Star Trek: 10 Secrets About The USS Enterprise-F You Need To Know
3. Crafty Construction
One of the defining features of the USS Enterprise-F and the Odyssey Class is the unusual double-neck configuration. According to the magazine included with the bonus edition of the USS Enterprise-F in the Eaglemoss Starships Collection, Adam Ihle's design was loved because it
"...was big and majestic, there were design cues from the Galaxy and Sovereign (classes) that made it feel familiar but the double neck was the icing on the cake."
Ihle himself had revisited the work of original Enterprise designer Matt Jefferies as well as Andrew Probert (Enterprise-D) and Doug Drexler (Enterprise-J) as inspiration for the design.
Ihle kept to the overall structure that his forebears had established. The saucer section was raised from the secondary hull, with two warp nacelles lifted from the main body via backward-facing pylons. Simply put, it looked like an Enterprise!
Cryptic's Thomas Marrone actually widened the necks for the transfer into the game and integrated them further into the design so that the saucer swept back into the Engineering hull. To date, this is the only class seen in canon that features such a distinct design feature.
The double-neck would receive a few minor tweaks for the Star Trek Online refit but remained an integral and immediately recognisable feature of the Enterprise-F.
