According to Star Trek: Picard, the NCC-1701-F was only in service for around 15 years. The reason for its decommissioning after Frontier Day 2401 is that during the 'Monfette Gambit' the Odyssey Class vessel suffered a catastrophic systems failure. It was deemed easier to take the ship out of service than it was to fix her, potentially leaving Starfleet without an Enterprise.

This does place the F as one of the longest surviving Enterprises in history. The original explored the galaxy for 40 years but the A,B,C, D and E all ended their careers well within that 15-year total. The Enterprise-D was only around for seven years making it one of the shortest in the lineage.

The Picard Logs which preceded season three revealed that the F was commissioned in 2386 with a series of unidentified captains during its lifetime. Admiral Shelby was noted by exec producer Terry Matalas to only be a ceremonial captain a part of the Frontier Day celebrations.

In Star Trek Online the Enterprise-F would only be commissioned in 2409, which suggests that the Sovereign Class E had a significantly longer career, though its final fate may still have been 'not Worf's fault'.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
