Star Trek: Every Bridge Ranked Worst To Best
6. "Guess Who's Coming For Dinner..." USS Enterprise - NCC-1701-A
Though this entry is technically about the Enterprise-A, we're including the refit NCC-1701. The bridge set for the first few TOS-era movies was a departure from the lower-budget TV iteration. Whilst the 1960s designers had to imagine how Space Exploration would've evolved; by 1979, humans had been doing it for quite a while.
The original movie bridges took inspiration from NASA, opting for a more uniform white and grey aesthetic. As The Wrath of Khan took more inspiration from submarine dogfights, the bridge became more practical than stylish. To cut costs, filmmakers used the same set for both the Enterprise and the Reliant.
Although a new aesthetic was teased, production crews opted to stay classic when the Enterprise A made her debut in The Voyage Home. Furthermore, they reused The Motion Picture's Enterprise bridge set, ironically changing it back from the USS Grissom's. As production began, this was to be the main setting for The Final Frontier.
However, storing it in the Paramount car park proved to be a bad idea. The set was destroyed by a freak storm, and few elements were salvageable. Production crews did their best, but the Enterprise-A's bridge for that movie lacked any real wow factor as a result... (though, let's be honest--that was the least of the problems).
The Undiscovered Country's Enterprise bridge was the apex of the era. The digital clocks may be outdated, but the larger and shinier design made for a real memorable swansong for the bridge crew--and a great transition into the newer series.
