Star Trek: Every Bridge Ranked Worst To Best
4. The Nexus Point - USS Kelvin (NCC-0514)
We've already talked about how the JJ Abrams-led team had designed the Enterprise bridge to be a little too... shiny. Yet, it was kind of the point--it was to look extra modern and pristine when compared to the only other ship (and, thus, bridge setting) that appeared earlier in the movie; the USS Kelvin's.
In fact, the Kelvin's was the first Federation bridge we had seen on the big screen since 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis. Whilst it was lit beyond radioactive, it was certainly impressive. Designers had went back to go forwards, deliberately taking inspiration from the lower-budget and classic movies' aesthetic. Imbruing the circular shape from the older bridges, the claustrophobic nature of today's submarine command decks, and adding some wear and tear to establish its used feel; the Kelvin looks like a product of the mid-22nd century era.
As intended by Abrams' team,, audiences know that they are watching a Star Trek movie within seconds of the Kelvin's first appearance. Add to that a plethora of remastered sound effects from TOS and voila--a modern, yet rather classic, take on the traditional bridge set. Which only makes it all the more disappointing that they designed it in such a way only to highlight the newness of the Apple Store Enterprise.
Bonus note: the Kelvin's bridge was re-used as the Kobayashi Maru training room, a-la The Wrath of Khan's recyclable set tripling as the Enterprise, Reliant and training bridges.
