Ups & Downs From Star Trek: Infinite

4. UP: It's Your Sandpit

The universe is big…. We mean really, really big. The way in which you command and control an empire, a dominion, or a union is all down to in-game decisions. The landscape of the Alpha Quadrant can turn out very differently from the franchise on TV and cinema. One day you might be extending the hand of friendship to the Romulans and sharing warp technology but find that in the next blink of an eye, the 2nd fleet is repelling an invasion from the Trill.

Infinite opens up the "what ifs" and maybes of Star Trek in a whole new way that allows players to rule and strategize in ways that are in keeping with the ethics of the show. But then again your Federation may actually be more Klingon Empire than it may at first appear. You can of course divert as far from the baseline as you want to.

This is one of the big wins of the game in that it can be whatever players want it to be. Hey, there's even the chance to switch sides, be underhand with allies, and look after number one rather than adhering to that pesky set of Federation rules... who needs General Orders anyway? Khitomer Accords? What are they?

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
